Jeera Rice has to be the most ordered rice dish in a restaurant. No restaurant meals were ever complete without ordering jeera rice.

Jeera rice/ Jeera pulao/ Cumin rice is packed with the flavor of jeera (obviously) a requires just a few ingredients. A good quality of Basmati rice, jeera (cumin), water, salt and oil and coriander/ cilantro. No it does not require any additional whole spices. It is called jeera rice for the obvious fact that the only spice which goes into is jeera/ cumin. I love the crackling crispness which the fried jeera imparts.

TIPS FOR COOKING THAT PERFECT RICE EACH TIME:
  1. Washing the rice in water until the water runs clear. Rinsing the rice helps to get rid of the excess starch which results in separate grains on cooking .
  2. If possible, soak the rice for 30 mins or at least for 10 mins. Soaking the rice helps to cook it faster. Soaking, allows the grains to absorb moisture and it is less likely to be broken while cooking.
  3. Adding a few drops of lemon juice to rice also ensures that the each grain of rice remains separate after cooking.

Ingredients

  • Long grain Rice (I have used Basmati rice) – 1 cup

  • Water – as required

  • Ghee – 1 tablespoon

  • Oil- 1 tablespoon

  • Salt- to taste

  • coriander – to garnish

  • Melted Butter – 1 tablespoon

Directions

  • Wash the rice till the water runs clear. Soak the rice with enough water. Cover it with a lid and let it soak for 20 mins.
  • After 20 mins, drain the water and keep the rice aside.
  • In a large pan, add enough water and salt and let the water come to a boil.
  • Carefully, add the rice and mix well and cook on a medium flame, and let the rice cook till it is 80% done. This takes approximately 6-7 minutes.
  • Then strain the rice using a strainer and transfer it to a plate.
  • Heat a pan on a medium flame. Add the oil and ghee.
  • Once the ghee melts slightly add the cumin seeds and saute it for a few seconds. Add in the rice, salt and coriander and mix it gently for a minute. Cover it with a lid and let it cook for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add in the melted butter and mix. Serve hot and enjoy.

Notes

  • The addition of melted butter makes it more flavorful and also imparts a shine and gloss to the rice grains. However, you can skip the addition of butter if you don’t like it.

SUGGESTED SERVINGS:

Jeera rice goes well with any type of veg or non -veg curries, or even with any types of dal – dal tadka, dal fry.
